California Classics has done it again with their latest collection, bringing a breathtaking transformation to a beautiful Carmel Valley home. The journey from the older 5” dark plank to the new, modern 9 ½” wide plank hardwood flooring has been nothing short of spectacular.
Initially, the homeowners were only interested in changing their balusters and had already enlisted the help of a stair company and another flooring company. However, when Matt, a friend of ours working on the project, noticed several crucial details being overlooked by the other flooring company, he suggested they consult with us to evaluate the project.
Upon visiting the site, I immediately spotted several missed details. The homeowners wanted to retain the bullnose edging detail on the steps to match the existing bullnose corners and trim on curved upper landing and exposed curved edges on the steps, which the other company had completely overlooked. Recognizing these details and listening to their specific needs, we quickly gained their trust and confidence.
Despite their busy lives as two working professionals with three kids and an active dog, we managed to coordinate a schedule that minimized disruption. They graciously accommodated the extensive process, which involved moving the furniture in stages before removing the existing flooring from the entire downstairs area then tackling the stairs and upstairs landing.
While the bedrooms were left for a future phase due to the project’s scale, we encountered some interesting challenges. Upon removing the old flooring, we discovered excessive moisture in the kitchen and family room. To protect their investment, we applied a secondary epoxy sealer and filled a large crack with epoxy, leveler, and an extra coat of moisture barrier adhesive during installation.
Jake, an avid motocross rider, had most of the garage converted into a home gym and dirt bike storage, limiting our staging area. Nevertheless, we managed to keep the project on track by loading materials directly into the home. We also highly recommend securing your pets away from the jobsite, unfortunately their older dog did not get that memo and wanted to watch every step of the process.
A hiccup occurred when the manufacturer’s listed bullnose nosing trim turned out to be a square edge profile, which didn’t suit the clients’ taste. We swiftly returned the unsuitable pieces and sourced unfinished oak bullnose, which we stained and finished on-site. Additionally, we created a new radius edge detail for the curved upper and mid-landing, another aspect the previous company had overlooked.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, we also provided and installed the popular 314 Coronado style 5” baseboards, which beautifully completed the look of this remarkable transformation.
This project highlights our commitment to detail, craftsmanship, and customer satisfaction. San Diego Flooring Pros continue to set the bar high, turning houses into dream homes with every project we undertake.
