Water damage is unfortunately one of the most common issues homeowners face in San Diego County, and for many families, it turns into much more than a simple repair. What starts as a leak can quickly become a full home renovation project—especially when older flooring products are no longer available.
That was exactly the situation Cindy found herself in at her beautiful Carlsbad home.
After experiencing a leak in her upstairs area, the damage spread beyond what anyone expected, affecting portions of the downstairs as well. Like many homeowners, Cindy immediately contacted her insurance company, who sent out a contractor to remove the damaged materials and begin the restoration process.
But when it came time to address the hardwood flooring, a major challenge surfaced.
The original hardwood flooring throughout the upstairs and several downstairs rooms had been discontinued, making a simple repair impossible. To make matters more stressful, contractors began discussing removing the entire hardwood floor system along with sections of subflooring—an overwhelming prospect for any homeowner.
Wanting another opinion, Cindy turned to something that matters most: trusted referrals from neighbors and friends in her Carlsbad community.
Fortunately, we had recently completed several hardwood flooring projects nearby, and our name came up more than once. Cindy reached out and asked if we could stop by to evaluate the situation and see if there was a smarter way to bring her home back to life.
Reimagining the Space with New Hardwood Flooring
After walking the project and discussing options, we developed a plan that went beyond simply replacing damaged flooring. This became an opportunity to completely refresh and modernize the home.
We selected a stunning hardwood product from the Opus collection that offered the updated look Cindy wanted while creating a cohesive feel throughout both levels of the house.
Our team carefully removed the existing hardwood flooring, addressed problem areas, and poured floor leveler where needed to ensure a flat, stable surface for long-term performance.
But the transformation didn’t stop at the floors.
Updating the Staircase for a More Modern Look
One of the biggest visual upgrades came from reworking the staircase. The older wing-style curved stair design felt dated and disconnected from the fresh aesthetic Cindy envisioned.
We reshaped and updated the stairs, replacing them with a cleaner, more timeless style that instantly elevated the entire home.
At the same time, Cindy’s father stepped in to help with other parts of the remodel, removing unused cabinetry, repainting walls, and priming the darker hardwood stair trim. Together, we lightened the overall appearance using the same finish color selected for the brand-new craftsman-style baseboards installed throughout the house.
The result was a bright, cohesive design that completely changed the feel of the home.
The Finishing Touch
To complete the transformation on both stair cases, Cindy brought in a stair railing company to fabricate a beautiful custom handrail system that perfectly complemented the updated modern staircase designs.
The finished project turned what began as a stressful water damage situation into a stunning home upgrade—one that added style, functionality, and long-term value.
