Sometimes, a beautiful flooring project turns into something much bigger than anyone expected. Our recent La Jolla hardwood flooring project was one of those experiences—a journey that began with a new homeowner’s vision and uncovered a series of unexpected challenges before culminating in a stunning modern transformation.

A New Home, A Fresh Vision

We were referred to this La Jolla home by the homeowner’s realtor. Our client was relocating from Chicago and purchasing a home that would serve as both a comfortable place to live and a home base for her business and remote work.

With plans for a fresh, modern design, she wanted flooring and architectural details that would complement the home’s style while creating a clean, sophisticated look throughout the space.

But as we began removing the existing flooring, we uncovered a much bigger problem.

Unexpected Water Damage Changes Everything

What initially appeared to be a straightforward flooring installation quickly became a major remediation project. As the work progressed, we discovered significant water intrusion coming from multiple areas of the home with the edges lifting and baseboards expanding.

Further investigation revealed moisture-related issues involving the flooring, walls, bathrooms, showers, exterior areas, sliding doors, roof, and stucco.

Before we could move forward with the new flooring, these underlying problems needed to be addressed properly. The project was put on hold while the necessary investigation and remediation took place. Old grey stone showing signs of yellowing from moisture was all removed.

Once the necessary work was completed, About a year later and the home was ready, we were able to return to the original vision and bring the new design to life.

Modern Hardwood Flooring With Clean Architectural Lines

With the home ready for installation, we got to work leveling the slab, using a moisture resistant adhesive and installing this beautiful, light-colored, wide-plank hardwood floor that transformed the feel of the interior.

The lighter tones created an open, airy atmosphere, while the wider planks enhanced the home’s contemporary aesthetic. The result was a clean, modern foundation that complemented the architecture and the homeowner’s design goals.

But the flooring was only part of the transformation.

Custom Stair Nosing and Modern Craftsman Baseboards

To carry the design throughout the home, we paid special attention to the architectural details.

The entry steps were particularly important. Their generous width made them a natural focal point, so we crafted custom, modern square-edge nosing to create a crisp, defined appearance that complemented the new flooring.

We also installed modern Craftsman-style baseboards, chosen to reinforce the home’s clean lines and contemporary character. Their simple, squared profiles tied the flooring and trim together, creating a cohesive look throughout the space.

These details may seem subtle, but they make a significant difference. Thoughtfully designed transitions, stair edges, and baseboards are what help turn a flooring installation into a complete architectural finish.

A Beautiful New Beginning in La Jolla

This project was a reminder that successful flooring work starts long before the first plank is installed. Addressing hidden problems, preparing the home properly, and paying attention to the smallest design details all contribute to the final result.

After navigating the unexpected challenges, we were excited to deliver a fresh, modern look for our client’s new La Jolla home—one that reflects her vision and creates a beautiful foundation for the next chapter of her life.
